CARBON PUMP

PHYTOPLANKTON AS THE FOUNDATION

Nature has created the perfect carbon removal mechanism, known as the biological carbon pump. Tiny phytoplankton converts CO2 into biomass. This is the beginning of the food chain.

Catalyzing the growth of plankton, the entire ecosystem will flourish. At the same time, they will emit aerosols that stabilize the climate through cloud-formation.

BENEFITS

CATALYZING PHOTOSYNTHESIS PROVIDES MULTIPLE BENEFITS

IRON BOOSTS PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Natural mineral dust, rich in iron, activates chlorophyll to catalyze natural CO2 capture by phytoplankton growing. CO2 and carbonic acid is converted to plankton shells and polysaccharide structures. Plankton will bloom within days after deployment, generating valuable feed for wildlife. Plankton will grow through photosynthesis absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere, generate aerosols for cloud formation and produce oxygen.

THE TECHNIQUE BRINGS SIGNIFICANT DIRECT & INDIRECT IMPACT

Direct impacts:

  • Climate change mitigation through creation of massive carbon removal in oceans
  • Biodiversity restoration in the oceans
  • Reduction of ocean acidification (reducing carbonic acid content in water)
  • Albedo restoration through generation of cloud forming aerosols

Indirect impacts:

  • Surface water cooling due to clouds, rain and daily plankton vertical migration
  • AMOC tipping risk reduced within this century
  • Nutrition improvement through returning fish to the oceans
